As the days grow darker, we move farther from light and warm weather. We know the Fall is in full swing. It's time for cups of tea, warm socks, stacks of books, and cozy chairs nuzzled next to crackling fireplaces.

It's also a great time to write a new poem! Whether you are a daily writer or an occasional weaver of words, it's always nice to have a little inspiration to stir your creative urges.

Here are Ten Poetry Prompts to Inspire You This Fall Season

We decided to compile a list of new poetry writing prompts to help you write some fall-themed poems. Take a break from the news and social media to curl up with your notebook or favorite device and get to writing!

  1. Describe the crunch of leaves beneath your feet. What sound or smell does it create? What does the scene look like?

  2. Look up the word "Hygge" and write a haiku based on the definition.

  3. Write a poem in the style of Edgar Allan Poe

  4. Write a poem using the topic "Harvest." Choose a form of poetry you've never written before, such as a villanelle or a sonnet (Tip: Check out Mark Strand and Eavan Holland's excellent book, The Making of a Poem).

  5. What is your most memorable Halloween as a child? Write about your costume, your neighborhood, a haunted house, or anything that reminds you of that year's celebration.

  6. Dios de Los Muertos falls at the end of October and is a day to remember family and friends who have passed. Write a poem in memory of someone you have lost. How do you honor their spirit?

  7. Consider what happens when seasons change. Write a stream of consciousness piece that focuses on moving from the light of summer into the darkness of winter.

  8. Who is your favorite horror character from pop culture? Dracula? Frankenstein? Hannibal Lector? Write a poem from their point of view.

  9. Make a list of what you are genuinely grateful for, and pick the top four. Write a sixteen-line poem with four-line stanzas for each subject.

  10. Write a poem about a ghost that's been haunting your home. What's their story? Do they have unfinished business? Have they returned to avenge their death? Get creative and tell the ghost's story.
